Funeral services for Sergeant Fred L. Hinkle, 22 of Pikeville, formerly of Fort Gay, who was killed…August [7], 1942, in the Solomon Islands were conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Hinkle Cemetery on Mill Creek near Fort Gay. The Fort Gay Vancouver Post of the American Legion was in charge of military rites. Sergeant Hinkle, son of Fred F. Hinkle of Pikeville and the late Laura Belle Dials Hinkle, entered the [Marine Corps] in September, 1938. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Presidential Unit Citation. While serving in the [Marine Corps], he was made a Kentucky colonel on the recommendation of the War Department to Governor Keen Johnson. Beside the father, he is survived by a brother, Delmas D. Hinkle of Portland, OR and seven sisters, Miss Irene Hinkle of McVeigh, KY, Mrs. George Ball and Mrs. Shular King of McAndrews, KY, Mrs. Herbert McCloud of McDowell, KY, Mrs. R. C. Wilson of Albany, OR, Mrs. Henry Kalz of Vancouver, WA and Mrs. W. M. Brown of Woodland, WA. Funeral services were under the direction of Curtright Funeral Home.
