HILL, LOUIS A.
WHITE ROCK – Service for Louis A. Hill, renowned artist, will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Ebenezer Lutheran Church, Columbia, with burial in Elmwood Cemetery and Gardens. Serving as pallbearers will be Grady Sharpe, Cliff Sharpe, Mark Sharpe, Mike Areheart, Todd Areheart and Tommy Hill. Visitation will be Tuesday 6-8 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, Irmo.
Mr. Hill died Monday, March 26, 2007, at the Lowman Home. Born in Columbia on April 1, 1922, he was the son of the late W. W. Hill and Rosa Belle Hill. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps at age 17 and proudly served his country from 1940-1946. He was honorably discharged as St/Sgt. (TW). He completed his education while in the Marine Corps and also studied professional art.
Moving later to New York, Mr. Hill was employed as an interior decorator at B. Altman Department Store and continued art classes at night. He later had a show at the Merchandise Mart in Atlanta where he sold a variety of merchandise. In Belleair, Florida, he had his own studio and painted all types of subject matter for consignment. This work has been collected widely in the U.S.A. His show “Our Angel of Mercy” was on exhibit Jan. 1-31, 1999 at the Largo Library.
“For many years my work has explored the quiet reflections of hope, peace, and now and tomorrow. Whatever the subject matter, religious, landscape, or portraits, my goal is to keep the effort as inspiring as possible so long as it represents my inner soul. This is an intuitive feeling that transpires between me and my work.”
Mr. Hill was a member of Ebenezer Lutheran Church to which memorials may be made: 1301 Richland St., Columbia, SC 29201.
Surviving are sisters, Annie Mae Bolton and Virginia Areheart; nieces, Barbara Bolton Sharpe, Faye Stockland and Patricia Hayes; nephews, C. Ray Areheart, Jr., Rev. Allen Areheart, Rev. Billy Hill, Tommy Hill, and Bobby Hill; and great-nieces and great-nephews.
Louis will be sorely missed by his family and his dear friend, Penelope Overcast of Largo, Florida.
