HERWIG, ROBERT J.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (UPI) – Robert J. Herwig, member of the Football Hall of Fame and two-time All-American at the University of California, died Saturday [December 14, 1974] of an apparent heart attack. He was 60-years-old.

Herwig had been a football coach and baseball coach at the American River College and served as a counselor when he died after a brief illness.

Elected to the National Football Hall of Fame in 1964, Herwig played center for the University of California when he was picked as an All-American in 1935. He also played guard in basketball.

Herwig finished out his college football career at the Berkeley campus by playing in the 1938 Rose Bowl when the University of California handed Alabama a 33-0 defeat.

He went on to serve in the Marine Corps in World War II and won the Navy Cross, Silver Star and Purple Heart with oak leaf cluster.

Later he coached football at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo and the University of Arizona.
