HARMS, GEORGE W.
George W. Harms, age 72, died Wednesday, June 30, 1993 at Glacier Hills Nursing Center after a brief illness. He was born May 6, 1921 in Detroit, the son of Walter S. and Kathryn (Walter) Harms. He had been a resident of Ann Arbor since 1939. He was married to Marguerite Babaian on August 3, 1957. He was a member of the American Legion, Military Order of the Purple Heart, Marine Corps League, Marine Raider Association, Sixth Marine Division Association, VFW, University of Michigan Victors Club, University of Michigan Dugout Club, Michigamua, The U of M Club of Ann Arbor, Sigma Epsilon Phi Alpha Chapter. Veteran United States Marines World War II, Fourth Raiders, and the Sixth Division. He earned a Bronze Star for Valor and the Purple Heart. He was a member of the Emeritus Club of the University of Michigan. He was a graduate of the University of Michigan 1943. He was Captain of the University of Michigan Baseball Team 1942. He played for the American Legion Baseball Team Roose Vanker Post in Detroit, Championship Team. He was a graduate of Eastern High School in Detroit 1939, and had a varied career in sports and business, and later as a bailiff for the Washtenaw County Circuit Court. Surviving are his wife Marguerite; two daughters, Kathlyn (Don) Elder of Spring Valley, CA, and Christine (David) Pasero of Rocklin, CA; one grandson, Nathan G. Romine of Albuquerque, NM; one sister, Georgina (Harold) Rowe of Sun City, AZ; one niece, Diane (Lawrence) Monnier of Gaithersburg, MD; four nephews; two grandnieces; one grandnephew. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Saturday at the Muehlig Chapel with the Rev. Russell Smith officiating. Interment will be made later at Fort Custer National Cemetery.
