HARDMAN, ROBERT G.
Mr. Robert G. Hardman, 93, of 330 West Second Street, Waynesboro, PA, passed away Friday, July 4, 2014 in Meritus Medical Center, Hagerstown, MD.
Born November 29, 1920 in Waynesboro, he was the son of the late Ivan C. and Mildred (Reed) Hardman. He was a lifelong resident of the Waynesboro area.
Mr. Hardman was a graduate of Waynesboro High School.
He served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II where he was one of Edson’s Raiders fighting in the Battle of Tulagi where he was the recipient of the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star.
He and his wife, the late Mrs. Virginia A. (Rock) Hardman, were married in August 1949. Mrs. Hardman passed away January 22, 1985.
Mr. Hardman was employed at Landis Tool Company, Waynesboro. He retired in 1986.
He was a member of Joe Stickell American Legion Post #15, Waynesboro, William Max McLaughlin V.F.W. Post #695, Waynesboro and the Marine Corps League. He was also a lifetime member of the Edson’s Raiders Association.
Mr. Hardman enjoyed baseball, reading and was a history buff. He also was a lifelong fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and the Washington Redskins.
He is survived by one son, Robert L. Hardman of Dallas, TX; five grandchildren, Angela McWilliams of Rockwall, TX, Christopher Hardman and Jennifer Hardman, both of Dallas, Andrew R. Avey of Waynesboro and Amy R. McKenrick of Chambersburg, PA; four great-grandchildren, Brianna Avey, Elleri McKenrick, Adeline Hardman and Collin McWilliams; and his son-in-law, Charles R. Avey.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy L. Avey who died January 24, 1999; a great-grandson, Henry McWilliams; and a brother, Teddy Hardman.
Services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Thursday, July 10, 2014 in Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 South Broad Street, Waynesboro. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro, where military graveside honors will be conducted by the honor guard of Charles Nitterhouse V.F.W. Post #1599, Chambersburg.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M., Wednesday evening, in the funeral home.
