HALLMARK, FLOYD V.

Final rites were held at Reilly’s Chapel Saturday afternoon for Marine Corp. Floyd Vaughan Hallmark, 22, who was killed in action Mar. 1, 1945, on Iwo Jima. Rev. W. H. Hedges of Phoenix officiated, and VFW Post No. 549 conducted graveside services in the plot in South Lawn Memorial Park.

Survivors are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Hallmark of Mesa, who received the Silver Star Medal for their son’s conspicuous gallantry in December, 1944.

The corporal landed in the first wave on Iwo Jima and took charge of his platoon when his sergeant was wounded. The group, under his leadership, silenced a Japanese machine gun and set out to capture it. The soldier was fatally wounded when he had almost reached his objective.

Corp. Hallmark joined the Marines here Mar. 2, 1942, and fought with Carlson’s Raiders in Guadalcanal and with the Third Marine Division on Bougainville.
