GREEN, SLONIE L.

Former Jones County Sheriff Slonie Loy Green, 63, of 127 Pine View Drive, died Sunday [November 10, 1985] at Jones County Community Hospital after a long illness.

Green served as sheriff from 1972 to 1976, after having served as a justice of the peace in Jones County from 1968 to 1972. Prior to that, he had been a patrolman with the state Highway Patrol.

After leaving the sheriff’s department in 1976, Green returned to the Highway Patrol in the property division, where he retired in 1980.

He was the recipient of numerous law enforcement awards.

The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Memory Chapel Funeral Home, with burial in Calvary Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Smith County. There will be a Mississippi Highway Patrol Rite at the graveside service. The Rev. Leon Carmical and John Howard will officiate.

He was a native of Smith County, and was a member of Parkview Baptist Church. He was a member of VFW Alex Box Post, and was a member of American Legion. He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 414, the Mississippi Highway Patrol Association and the Law Enforcement Association. He was a member of the Tennessee and Mississippi Peace Officer Association.

He is survived by his widow, Daisy Williams Green of Laurel; children, Olene B. Nixon of Gautier, Myrna Butler of Ocean Springs, Richard Green of Moss Point, Garry W. Kennedy of Ellisville; brothers and a sister, Ruth Prince, John Green, Stokes Green and Cecil Hegwood, all of Taylorsville; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. today at Memory Chapel Funeral Home, which is in charge of arrangements.
