GIFFORD, JOSEPH

Nineteen Navy and Marine Corps officers and men from the Los Angeles area were officially reported killed, wounded or missing in action in the Navy’s latest casualty list, issued yesterday. The list covers the period between Aug. 13 and 30.

Of this number, four were listed as dead, one wounded and 14 missing.

Missing [August 18, 1942]: Corp. Joseph Gifford, U.S.M.C., mother, Mrs. V. Martin, 519 N. Palos Verdes St., San Pedro.

Historian’s note: Cpl. Gifford was subsequently captured by the Japanese, taken to Kwajalein and executed on 16 October 1942.
