GIBBINS, WALTER W.
Pfc. William Walter Gibbins, USMC, was the first Sallisaw boy to make the supreme sacrifice. He was killed in action [July 20, 1943] on New Georgia in the Solomon Islands. He entered the service May 21, 1942 and was sent to San Diego for training. Late in January 1943 he was promoted to private first class before going overseas. Walter was a native of Sallisaw being born here 21 years ago, he had lived here all his life. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Gibbins, three brothers and three sisters reside in Sallisaw.
