GALGANO, GEORGE W.

One of the few First Marine Raiders to survive all the major battles of the South Pacific, Pfc. George Winslow Galgano of 214 North Austin Boulevard was killed in action on June 11 [1945] at Okinawa.

Enlisting while residing in Chicago three years ago, Pfc. Galgano saw 30 months of decisive action during which most of the members of his Marine Division were killed. The survivors of the First went over to the 6th Division of the Marine Corps shortly before the battles on Okinawa. Pfc. Galgano was killed in the battle in which Gen. Buckner lost his life. His father, Joseph, a tailor at 8 South Dearborn, received government notice of his son’s death but no further information has been forthcoming.

George, who was 33, was interested in journalism, and at one time contributed to this journal. Before enlisting he was employed in the offices of a Chicago printing firm. He was called home in the spring of 1943 when his mother passed away. Having just completed training he was sent overseas shortly afterward. A brother, Michael, is stationed at Pearl Harbor as a rigger with the Navy. Two sisters, Mary and Francesca, reside at home with their father. A memorial mass on Saturday morning took place at St. Catherine of Siena Church.
