FULLERTON, EUGENE

Former Hastings resident Eugene “Rebel” Fullerton, 78, of Shell Knob, Mo., died Sunday, Aug. 8, 1999, at his home.

Military graveside services are 1 p.m. Monday at the National Cemetery in Springfield, Mo., with the Rev. Don Barton officiating. Williamson Funeral Home of Shell Knob is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Fullerton was born Sept. 26, 1920, to Claude and Lyde (Nichols) Fullerton in Carthage, Mo. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a First Marine Raider veteran of Guadalcanal and New Georgia in the Solomon Islands. He received the Bronze Star, two battle stars and the Purple Heart. He was a member of the Singing Marine Corps 8-Balls, which recorded for the Library of Congress. He attended Hastings College and was stationed at the Naval Ammunition Depot in Hastings. On Sept. 12, 1944, he married Betty Woods in Denver. He retired from his insurance agency in Alamosa, Colo., where he lived for 15 years. He was a resident of Shell Knob for the last 23 years.

He also was past commander of the VFW Post and the American Legion Post, and was a member and past Elk of the Year, all in Alamosa.

Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Claudia Fullerton of Martinez, Calif., and Kathleen Fullerton of Johnson City, Tenn.; one brother, Jack Fullerton of Kansas City, Mo.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother.

Memorials may be given to the American Heart Association in care of the funeral home.
