FISHER, ASHLEY W., III

Ashley William “Bill” Fisher III, 80, of Brighton, died Friday night [February 3, 2006] at his home after battling cancer.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Covington.

Burial will take place at a later date at National Cemetery in Memphis.

He was born Dec. 30, 1925 in Memphis to Ashley W. Fisher Jr. and Dorothy Ozanne.

He entered the Marine Corps in January 1942 at the age of 16 and served with the 2nd Battalion of Carlson’s Raiders at Guadalcanal. He also served during the Korean War. Fisher remained in the Marines and Marine Reserves until 1980.

On April 18, 1949, he married Julia Stefano Fisher.

He was an active member of the St. Matthew’s Church, serving on the Vestry Board. He was also a member of the Methodist Men’s Club, where he regularly attended the Thursday morning breakfast event.

Fisher was active in the Tipton County Veterans Council, was president of the national Marine Raider Association at the time of his death, was a lifetime member of the Marine Corps League and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was a graduate of Loyola University.

Survivors include his wife of the family home; daughters Mary Catherine Wade of Oak Ridge; Claire Taylor of Manchester, Mo.; Julie Sheridan of Seattle; and Rachel Shadeed of Houston; sons Michael Fisher of Memphis and Peter Fisher of Brighton. He is also survived by a brother, Frank William Fisher of Memphis; as well as 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four sons, Frank, Ashley IV, John and Robert.

The family asks that memorials be made to the organization of their choice.
