ELDER, ERNEST A., JR.
Private First Class Ernest A. Elder Jr., USMC, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest A. Elder, 1405 Yale Avenue, was killed in action in the Southwest Pacific February 9 [1944].
Private Elder was born in Salt Lake City March 21, 1925, a son of Ernest A. and LaVon D. Elder. He was educated in Salt Lake public schools and left East High School to enlist in the Marine Corps November 8, 1942.
After completing recruit training at San Diego, Calif., Private Elder was assigned to active duty in the Southwest Pacific. He volunteered as a Marine Raider and fought in that capacity during his one year overseas.
Besides his parents, Private Elder is survived by two sisters, Marian and Louise Elder, and a brother, Robert Elder, Salt Lake City.
Historian’s note: Pfc. Ernest A. Elder, Jr.’s death was due to accidental drowning and was not a result of combat with the enemy.
