DOUGHERTY, WILLIAM F., JR.

William Franklin Dougherty Jr., 88, of Enterprise, died Nov. 2, 2013, at Wallowa Memorial Hospital. He was known as Bill or “Red” to his friends and family.

He moved to Enterprise in 1997 to retire in a location that reminded him of Fruitland, Idaho, where he was born Dec. 20, 1924, to William Franklin and Thelma (Smith) Dougherty.

He was raised in the Tillamook area, but took many trips to Fruitland where his maternal grandfather owned a farm. His forbears included some of the first settlers in Tillamook County.

Bill left high school in Tillamook when WWII broke out and joined the U.S. Marine Corps where he became a Marine Raider. He served in the Pacific Campaign for three years, 1942-1945, and saw hard duty in areas that included New Georgia, Guam, Guadalcanal, British Solomon Islands and Mariana Islands. He was a private first class, sharpshooter and automatic rifleman.

He was called back to active duty for the Korean War in August 1950. He served as a corporal for two years in Camp Pendleton in California where he helped train soldiers.

In 1950 he married Beatrice Self who moved with him to the Oceanside area near Camp Pendleton.

Between the two military campaigns, Bill attended Linfield College. Following military service he graduated from Pacific University, with a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in art. He also attended the Portland Art Museum school for three years.

Subsequently, Bill taught arts and crafts in the public school system in the Cottage Grove area for 28 years before retiring in 1983. He turned down a chance to be a state-level arts instruction superintendent to stay in the classroom.

Bill liked nature and outdoor activities including camping, fishing, painting landscapes, designing home building projects and traveling. He enjoyed meeting many people in the local Enterprise area arts community.

A devoted teacher, he was also a devoted father and family man. His son Craig preceded him in death in 2012.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Beatrice; daughter Denise Meek; daughter-in-law Cindy Dougherty; brother and sister-in-law John and Linda Dougherty; grandchildren Amanda Ross, Willie Dougherty and Chris Dougherty; and seven great-grandchildren.
