DOCKERY, JOSEPH P.
Mass for Joseph P. Dockery, 68, an accountant, will be said at 10 a.m. Friday in St. Norbert Catholic Church, 1809 Walters Ave., Northbrook. Mr. Dockery, of Northbrook, died Monday [November 24, 1986] in Glenbrook Hospital, Glenview. A native of Chicago, he won recognition during World War II when, as a 25-year-old Marine Corps lieutenant, he led a Marine force that “yelled like a football cheering section“ to make the Japanese think an assault was coming, and drove them from a position opposing the American advance at Viru Harbor on New Georgia Island. Mr. Dockery is survived by two sons, Peter and Mark; three daughters, Diane and Laura Dockery and Kathleen Ofsthun; four grandchildren; a brother; and a sister.
