TALLAHASSEE: Hugh Craven Davis, 73, of Tallahassee died Wednesday, March 20, 1996. The service will be noon Saturday at Strickland-Ferrell Family Cemetery in Leon County. Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm Friday at Culley’s Meadow Wood Riggins Road Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. A lifelong resident of Tallahassee, he was the sixth generation of his family to live in Leon County. He worked in probation and parole for Apalachee Community Mental Health, was employed by the North Florida Comprehensive Task Force and was co-founder of Davis Trophies. He was a part of the Marine Corps’ Edson’s Raiders in World War II, serving in the Solomon Islands campaigns and the Battle of Bloody Ridge on Guadalcanal. He was also a veteran of the Korean War, participating in the Inchon amphibious invasion. He received the Purple Heart and retired at the rank of major. He was past president of the Edson’s Raiders Association, the SAR, the TROAA and the Guadalcanal Campaign Veterans Association. He was a member of Beth Page Church. He is survived by his wife, Betty Caldwell Davis of Tallahassee; two sons, Hugh C. Davis Jr. and Thomas W. Davis, both of Tallahassee; a daughter, Nita Davis of Santa Rosa, Calif.; two brothers, Gillum C. Davis of Fruitland Park and Samuel L. Davis of Merritt Island; a sister, Frances Andrews of Starke; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
