COPP, WILLIAM H.

AUBURN — William H. “Bill” Copp, 77, Auburn, died Saturday, March 31, 2001, at a Topeka hospital.

Mr. Copp had been a cement finisher on a road construction crew and he was a street inspector for the city of Topeka. He served in the Marine Corps during World War II and was a PFC rifle marksman with the 3rd Raider Battalion and 7th Marine Regiment. He was involved in five major campaigns in the Pacific Theater, including the final battle of World War II on Okinawa.

He was born Sept. 6, 1923, in Topeka, the son of Harry M. and Lottie M. Hamby Copp. He attended Topeka High School and received his diploma on March 4, 2001, as part of the World War II Veterans Operation Recognition program. He had lived in Auburn since 1958.

He married Jacqueline G. Bradley on July 25, 1946, in Topeka. She survives.

Other survivors include three sons, Maurice D. Copp, Wichita, William P. Copp, Ozawkie, and Daniel L. Copp, Auburn; a brother, Charles “Pete” Copp, Auburn; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandsons.

Cremation is planned. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Auburn Community Center.
