COKER, JAMES R.

ANDERSON, June 25 – James R. Coker, 28, of Ypsilanti, Mich., died early this morning [June 25, 1953] from injuries he received in an automobile wreck in Ypsilanti earlier in the day.

He was born and reared in Anderson County and had been in Ypsilanti for four weeks. He was a machinist by trade and a member of the Baptist denomination. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of the First Marine [Raider Battalion]. He saw service in the South Pacific and was wounded on Bougainville.

His mother was the late Mrs. Jessie King Coker.

He is survived by his father, J. J. Coker Sr.; his step-mother, Mrs. Vennie Abbott Coker of 26 R St., Anderson; his wife, Mrs. Douglas Meade Coker; two daughters, Misses Connie and Vivian Coker, both of the home; four brothers, J. J. Jr. of Pascagoula, Miss., W. J. and Sloan Coker, both of Anderson, and David Coker of Ypsilanti; two sisters, Misses Annie and Nancy Coker, both of Anderson.

The body is being returned to Anderson for funeral services and burial. It will arrive here Monday. Further announcements will be made by McDougald Johnston Funeral Home.
