CLIFFORD, FRED W.
Fred William “Churn” Clifford, 96, husband of Leatha Delcena “Pert” Hollingsworth Clifford, died Friday, March 30, 2012, at Richard Campbell VA Nursing Home.
Born in Anderson County, he was a son of the late William Joseph and Jessie Mabel Hutchinson Clifford. Churn served in the Navy, attached to the Marines, for six years during World War II. He was employed by JP Stevens in Piedmont, was a member of the American Legion for thirty-nine years and a founding member of the Piedmont Volunteer Fire Dept. For seventeen years, he served as Commissioner of the Piedmont Fire and Sewer District. A lifelong Clemson fan, he also loved gardening, fishing, and woodworking.
In addition to his wife of the home, surviving are his daughters Jan Clifford and her husband Phillip Neal of New Orleans, LA and Laurie C. Taylor and her husband Ellis of St. Louis, MO; and three grandchildren Jon, Katie, and Ben Taylor.
He was predeceased by his sisters Kathleen Ross, Dorothy Clifford, Clara Cargill, and Donna Lee Clifford; and his brothers Jim, Joe, and Bobby Clifford.
Visitation will be 10:00-11:00 a.m. Tuesday at Piedmont Presbyterian Church. Funeral services will follow at the church Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Dolly Cooper Veterans’ Cemetery.
