CASHMORE, GEORGE H.
Hastings – Military services for Marine Pfc. George H. Cashmore, 19, of Dowling were held Friday at the Union Cemetery in Maple Grove Township, following services at the Hebble Funeral Home.
Military rites were conducted by the Gen. Smedley D. Butler detachment of the Marine Corps League of Battle Creek.
Pfc. Cashmore was born Nov. 22, 1924 in Assyria Township. He was orphaned at an early age and at the time of enlistment was living with his grandmother, Mrs. Edwin Smith of Dowling.
He was killed by a Japanese hand grenade on the first day of the Guam invasion. Previously he had landed on Emirau Island near New Guinea. He had been overseas 10 months. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in January, 1943 and was killed [July 23, 1944].
Besides his grandparents he is survived by three sisters and two brothers who were reared by friends and relatives and who adopted their surnames. They are Minnie Cashmore of Coldwater, Alberta Paynes of Kalamazoo, Mrs. Viola Willard of Johnstown Township, Albert Smith and Wilber Graham of Assyria Township.
