BURKHOLDER, MELVILLE M.
Private Melville M. Burkholder of Red Lodge, a member of the Marine Corps, has been killed in action [July 1, 1943] at an undisclosed theater of war, according to information received Tuesday by Sergeant Gene Pearson, local Marine recruiter.
Sergeant Pearson said a telegram to Private Burkholder’s mother, Mrs. Helen L. Burkholder of Red Lodge, had stated he was killed in action “in the performance of his duty and in the service of his country.”
The information from the War Department also stated, Sergeant Pearson said, that “present situation necessitates interment temporarily in the locality where death occurred and you will be notified accordingly.”
The mother was requested not to divulge the name of Private Burkholder’s ship or station, Pearson said.
