BRUCK, EDWARD P., JR.

War’s grim reality struck San Marino over the weekend when news was released of the death of Private First Class Edward Porter Bruck, Jr., Marine Corps Raider, who was killed in action [July 20, 1943] somewhere in the South Pacific.

Porter, as he was known to his schoolmates and family, Mr. and Mrs. Porter Bruck of 1000 Sierra Madre Boulevard, was one of San Marino’s own boys, having lived his short young life in this city and graduated from the Huntington School, South Pasadena-San Marino Junior High School and then attended the high school only to leave before graduation and enlist in the Marine Corps when he reached his seventeenth birthday.

Following his initial training at the Marine Corps Base at San Diego, he elected to join a Marine Raider battalion and received his training at Camp Pendleton before being sent to the South Pacific earlier this year.

Besides his parents, Private Bruck leaves a brother, David, and a sister, Mrs. G. W. Baker, III (Barbara Bruck) whose husband is a lieutenant in the U.S. Army and is serving at Camp Haan.

Well known in San Marino as well as throughout Southern California, is the young private’s father, who served as trustee on the San Marino School Board and is first vice-president of the Title Insurance and Trust Company of Los Angeles and president of the All-Year Club of Southern California.

When sad news of the death of Porter reached this city it was noted that he is the first San Marino boy to be killed in active combat duty since the advent of the war and the many friends of the Bruck family have joined in extending their condolences.
