BENISH, JAMES A.
Mrs. Dell H. Small, Arch Street, is in receipt of word that her nephew, Private First Class James A. Benish of Tarentum has been killed in action [September 14, 1942]. Notification of the young man’s death was given by the Red Cross to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Benish, 935 Ninth Avenue, Tarentum, but carried no details. The young man would have been 23 years of age on October 23.
After serving three years in Hawaii, he reenlisted in the Marines as a member of the [1st] Raider Battalion and was sent outside the boundaries of this country last June. It is thought he may have met death in the Solomon Islands battle of recent date.
Besides his parents, he is survived by another brother, Charles A. Benish who is located at Fort George Meade, Md., and one sister, Betty. Mrs. Benish is known here, she having visited in the home of her sister, Mrs. Small, where she spent 10 days recently at the time of the illness and death of Mr. Small.
