BARRETT, JAMES F.

Private memorial services for James F. “Chief” Barrett, 69, of 1616 N. Palmetto Ave., who died at 12:15 p.m. Thursday [April 16, 1992] at St. Joseph’s Hospital, will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Rembs/Kundinger Chapel. There will be no public visitation.

The Rev. Donald F. Wilger, a chaplain at St. Joseph’s Hospital, will officiate. Burial will be in Hatfield.

He was born June 5, 1922, in Marshfield, to James D. and Frances M. (Stauber) Barrett Sr. He attended St. John’s Parochial School and was a 1940 graduate of Marshfield Senior High School. He married Lynette D. Sommers Sept. 24, 1946, at St. John’s Catholic Church.

He entered the U.S. Marine Corps on Feb. 17, 1942. He served in the Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II with the U.S. Marine [3rd] Raider Battalion until his discharge on Feb. 16, 1946. He then returned to Marshfield and joined Lloyd L. Felker Co. where he worked in sales. He then worked in sales in the plywood industry throughout Wisconsin and the Midwest. He later was associated with Madary Pole Building of Onalaska, again in sales, until retiring due to ill health. He continued to reside in Marshfield until the time of his death. He had been admitted to the hospital earlier in the day Thursday.

He was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1866 of Marshfield and the Raider Association of the U.S. Marine Corps.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Steve and Mark, both of Marshfield; one brother, Paul of Beloit; and four grandsons.

He was predeceased by his father in 1957, by his mother in 1988, by one son, Patrick J. Barrett, on Oct. 29, 1950, and by one brother, Robert, who was killed in 1945 while serving with the U.S. Army in the Philippines during World War II.
