BANKS, CHARLES L.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Charles L. Banks, a retired Marine brigadier general and winner of medals of valor in two wars, died Monday [February 22, 1988] of cancer. He was 73.
Banks became a Marine Corps officer after graduating from the Virginia Military Institute in 1936 and fought with Edson’s Raiders on Guadalcanal early in World War II. He received the Navy Cross for his actions in the Marine breakout at Chosin Reservoir in Korea. Upon his 1959 retirement Banks also received two Legions of Merit and the Silver Star.
