BALL, VIRGIL E.

LEWISTOWN—Virgil E. Ball, 85, of 421 E. MacArthur, a former Fulton County sheriff, died 2:07 p.m. Monday, May 31, 1999, at Prairie View Care Center.

Born Oct. 18, 1913, in Banner Township to Clifford and Roxie Wages Ball, he married Janet Ellsworth on Dec. 8, 1945, in Hannibal, Mo. She survives.

Also surviving are one son, John of Lewistown; one daughter, Pam Elkin of Canton; two sisters, Edna Meacham of Farmington and Virginia Lindzey of Canton; and three grandchildren.

One brother preceded him in death.

He was a coal miner for 11 years at Buckheart Mine, which later became Freeman United Coal Mine. He retired in 1976.

He was a World War II Marine Corps veteran, serving as a master gunnery sergeant in the Pacific. He became a Marine recruiter in 1950 during the Korean War.

He was a lifelong member of the Canton American Legion Post 16 and the Marine Raider Association. He was a past member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5001 in Lewistown, where he served as commander.

He also had served as the Fulton County treasurer. He was a former Fulton County deputy and Canton police officer.

He was former president of the Fulton County Youth Council.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Murphy-Sedgwick Memorial Home in Canton. The Rev. Jack Perryboom will officiate. Visitation will be one hour before services at the memorial home. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Canton.

Memorials may be made to the Fulton County Youth Council or to Lewistown Rescue Squad.
