BAILEY, KENNETH D.

Members of the family of Major Kenneth D. Bailey, 32, a nephew of Mrs. J. R. Werness, of Welch, have received word that he has been killed in action [September 27, 1942] in the Solomons island campaign.

Major Bailey, a United States Marine Corps officer, was an outstanding hero of battles during American occupation of part of the Solomons two months ago.

Mrs. Werness was called to Charleston yesterday. Major Bailey’s wife is the former Miss Betty Speissegger, daughter of Commander and Mrs. J. M. Speissegger. Mrs. Werness and Mrs. Speissegger are sisters. Mrs. Bailey has been making her home with her grandfather, P. W. Early of Charleston.

Major Bailey participated in the battles of Tulagi, Gavutu and Tanambogo.
