AYERS, GERALD L.

Pvt. Gerald L. Ayers enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in Sept. 1942, and trained at San Diego, Calif., and Camp Pendleton, Oceanside, Calif. In February, 1943, he was sent overseas. Pvt. Ayers was killed in action at New Georgia on July 20, 1943, with the 4th Marine Raiders and buried at Bairoko.

The former Windsor boy was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. In wiping out a nest of snipers he sacrificed his life but made the advance of his platoon possible. The son of Mrs. Bessie Ayers and William A. Ayers, he was born January 6, 1924, and graduated from Windsor High School in 1941. His only brother, Richard, was also killed in this war.
