News of the death [July 10, 1943] in the South Pacific war Theater of Cpl. Samuel Anderson, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. LeRoy Anderson, 1002 E. Madison, added another gold star to the flag of his grandmother, Mrs. Ellen Anderson, 702 Jewell St. Samuel was a Marine Raider. The first gold star in his grandmother’s flag is for Cadet Donald Anderson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Anderson, 613 N. Collett, who was killed last February in the crash of a Navy training plane near St. Louis. Mrs. Anderson has three other grandsons in the service—Capt. Francis Anderson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Anderson, who is in England, and Dale and Keith Berry of Zeigler, who are in the Army. They are the sons of Mrs. Gertrude Anderson Berry. All five grandsons were pallbearers at the funeral of their grandfather, the late Wesley E. Anderson, who passed away nearly two years ago. The parents of Samuel Anderson, who have been in DeKalb, where the father is in charge of electrical installations in the New Northern Illinois Teachers College, returned home Friday and Sunday were receiving the sympathy of their many friends. The message announcing the death in action of their son stated that the body would be temporarily buried there. They have no knowledge of the location of their son’s company but hope to be able to bring his body home at the conclusion of the war. They have another son Robert, 18, at home.
