ANDERSON, PHILIP J.

DELL RAPIDS, S.D. – Philip J. Anderson, 55, died Saturday morning [September 16, 1978] at his home.

He was born at Akron, Iowa, and grew up near Dell Rapids. He served in World War II until 1945, and was a member of the U.S. Marine Corps Raiders. He married Helen Brown on Dec. 31, 1945, and was a businessman and rural mail carrier in Dell Rapids for 25 years. He was the coach of the American Legion baseball team for the past 25 years, and was also an official for high school basketball and football for 25 years.

He is survived by his wife, Helen; two sons, Barry, Tacoma, Wash., and Cliff, Madison, S.D.; three daughters, Mrs. Gary Boyum, Anaheim, Calif., Mrs. Vince Schaefer, Wentworth, S.D., and Mrs. Richard Koch, Gillette, Wyo.; 12 grandchildren; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Herb Anderson, Trent, S.D.; two brothers, Lawrence and Gordon, both of Tacoma, Wash., and one sister, Mrs. Vernon Kepler, Fargo, N.D.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Dell Rapids Lutheran Church. Prayers will be said at 7:30 p.m. today at the Hermanson-Kahler Funeral Home.
