ALBERG, WILEY E.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Lutheran Church for Wiley E. Alberg, 74, Topeka, a former teacher and coach, who died Monday, Aug. 2, 1999, at home.
He was born Nov. 12, 1924, in Scranton, to Walter C. and Thelma M. Shaw Alberg. He graduated from Scranton High School in 1942. He received a BA degree from the College of Emporia in 1949 and a master’s degree in administrative education from Emporia State University in 1956. He began his teaching career at Scranton High School in 1950.
He was a teacher, coach and administrator for Topeka Public Schools from 1954 to 1966. He taught at Roosevelt and Capper Junior High schools and at Topeka High School. He was the first basketball coach at West High School when it opened in 1961. He also was a teacher and administrator at West High.
He moved in 1966 to Emporia, where he was an educational administrator at Emporia State University until 1989. He was dean of men at Emporia State for 23 years. He returned to Topeka in 1994.
Mr. Alberg was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Marine Corps from 1943 to 1945.
He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Topeka and had served on the council at St. Mark’s Lutheran in Emporia.
He was a member of Ball-McColm Post No. 5 of the American Legion in Emporia, Disabled American Veterans, the College of Emporia “E” Club, Kansas National Education Association, National Association of Student Personnel Administration and Topeka Area Retired Teachers Association.
He married Rosella Davis June 6, 1948, in Topeka. She survives.
Other survivors include a son, Samuel Wiley Alberg, Wichita; a daughter, Susan Linn Alberg, Topeka; a brother, Walter C. Alberg Jr., Topeka; a grandson and a granddaughter.
Burial will be in Scranton Cemetery.
Mr. Alberg will lie in state after 10 a.m. today at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Funeral Home, where visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m.
