Retired Marine Corps Col Henry J. “Hank” Adams Jr., 70, of Fairfax, Va., died Friday [February 10, 1978] in Fairfax after a long illness.

Inurnment of the ashes will take place in San Diego at a later date.

Col. Adams, as an officer in the First Marine Division, was active in seven major campaigns in the Pacific during World War II, earning two Bronze Stars, an Admiral’s Commendation, two Presidential Unit Citations and a Purple Heart.

He also gained international fame as a marksman.

During his long competitive shooting career, he won more than 900 medals for his marksmanship. He was a firing member of the U.S. International Rifle Team from 1928 to 1935 and was All-Around Rifle and Pistol Champion of the United States in 1935.

His survivors include four children, Leilani Robertson of London and Henry J. Adams III, Christie T. Adams and John Quincy Adams, all of Hawaii.
