CLARKSON, FREDERICK D.
Don Clarkson, a prominent golf professional for many years, died Saturday [June 3, 1989] of Alzheimer’s disease at the Castle Haven Nursing Home in Belleville, Clarkson, 65, had been ill for several years.
Clarkson, a longtime officer in the Professional Golfers Association, grew up with golf, starting as a caddie when he was 10. He broke in at Glen Echo Country Club under his father, Fred, the head pro at Glen Echo from 1911 to 1953.
When Fred became pro emeritus in 1953, Don replaced him as head pro. He switched to Old Warson Country Club in 1963, staying there till 1974.
Don Clarkson was wounded while serving in the Marines. He fought in World War II and the Korean War. He was with Carlson’s Raiders.
His playing career was highlighted by appearances in the U.S. Open and the PGA Tournament and several foreign tournaments.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Krieghauser’s West Funeral Home, 9450 Olive Boulevard. A service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.
