SHELTON, HERBERT, JR.
Herbert Shelton, Jr. passed away Sunday, November 19, 2017. Mr. Shelton was born in Plainview, Arkansas Saturday March 17, 1923, the second child of Herbert and Ida Mae Crowder Shelton. Herbert was a Methodist and served his churches with his presence, gift and service.
The memorial service will be held Sunday, November 26, 2017 at First United Methodist Church in Bryan, Texas at 1:00. Visitation will follow the service. Reverend Rick Sitton, pastor of First United Methodist Church in Bryan will officiate. Private burial will be held for family earlier with Reverend Jerry Carter officiating at Red Oak Cemetery in Red Oak, Texas.
He graduated from Ola High School in Ola, Arkansas. Mr. Shelton was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, having enlisted February 18, 1943 in Little Rock, Arkansas. Herb, as he was known by most, was a member of the 3rd Raiders Battalion in the South Pacific campaign at Bougainville in the Solomon Islands. He was discharged from the service on March 20, 1946 in Chicago IL. On a visit to see his sister, Herb met his future wife, Eris Avera, in Mobile, Alabama. They were married June 27, 1946.
Eris and Herbert moved to Dallas where he worked for a few years in Cabell’s convenience stores and for Dr. Pepper. He then began his 27-year career with the post office in Garland which included walking a route, supervisor of a substation, and postmaster in Desoto, Texas. Retirement did not slow him down. He began a 10-year career as a bank teller before he retired again and started volunteering. Herb volunteered 18 years at Baylor Hospital in Waxahachie. Herb and Eris celebrated their 62th wedding anniversary before Eris passed away in September of 2008.
Herb moved to Bryan in 2011 and started his volunteering again with Mobility Worldwide, formerly P.E.T., and The Crestview Volunteers. In his spare time, Herb enjoyed cooking, watching those Texas Rangers and Dallas Cowboys, really any sport and talking cars.
Herb was preceded in death by wife of 62 years, Eris, his parents, sisters and their husbands, Martha Nelle Willis (Louie), Dorotha Jo Buford (Bill), brother-in-law, and his wife, Joy Avera (Mona), sister-in-law, Joyce Avera, brothers-in-law, Raymond Avera, Bobby Avera, B.J. Avera and Bruce Adams, son-in-law, Mack Smith.
He is survived by his daughters and son-in-law, Ellen Smith, Lynn and Jim Stuckey, son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Jana Shelton. Also surviving are grandchildren and spouses, Lane (Amelia) Smith, Emily (Philip) Butler, Brian Maass, Greg (Melissa) Maass, Carrie (Matt Czisny) Maass, Brittany Shelton and Ben Shelton. Great-grandchildren, Caroline and Cullen Butler, Owen and Avery Czisny, Greyson Maass, Logan Shelton and Waylon Coan. In addition, he is survived by sister-in-law, Irma Adams, brothers-in-law, and wife, Don Avera, and Kenneth (Linda) Avera and many nieces and nephews.
