GLECKNER, ARLINGTON R.

Arlington R. Gleckner, Southport’s town attorney for 24 years until his retirement from the post last August, died Saturday [March 24, 1984] of a stroke at St. Joseph’s Hospital. He was 63.

Mr. Gleckner, of 1623 Pine Hill Drive, Pine City, was a partner in the Elmira law firm of Buck Gleckner Danaher & Harpending. He worked as a trial lawyer. The Southport Town Board appointed him town attorney in 1959.

“He was a very personable, very compassionate, very considerate man,” said George H. Carpenter, the former town supervisor who worked with Mr. Gleckner for 11 years. “I liked him very, very much.”

Mr. Gleckner preferred to be called Ed, after his father, a farmer in Liberty. After graduating from Liberty’s local schools, Gleckner joined the Marine Corps and served at Guadalcanal and other areas of the Pacific during World War II. He was discharged with the rank of sergeant.

Mr. Gleckner went on to graduate from Lycoming College in Williamsport, and in 1952 earned his law degree from Brooklyn Law School. After about a year of private practice, he joined the law firm of Teeter Harpending Fox & Swartwood, which later became Buck Gleckner Danaher & Harpending.
