BALDWIN, AARON A.

Aaron A. Baldwin, 77, of W. River Rd., passed away on Saturday, December 23, 2000, following a brief illness. Aaron was born on July 7, 1923, in Chemung, N.Y., one of ten children to the late Ebenezer and Amy (Austin) Baldwin. He attended school in Briggs Hollow and was a graduate of the Nichols High School class of 1941. Following graduation Aaron enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he served his country proudly during World War II as a code communication specialist. On October 13, 1944, in San Diego, Calif., he married Mavis Howe, his schoolmate and best friend. Aaron was a 57-year member of the Owego American Legion Post 401 and also a member of the Nichols Country Club. He enjoyed golfing, hunting and gardening. Aaron retired in 1983 following over 31 years as a government inspector, overseeing production at IBM and GE. In addition to his wife, Mavis of 56 years, he is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Mary Baldwin, Crest Hill, Ill., Davis and Eva Baldwin, Barton; daughters and sons-in-law, Diana and Henry Derix, Westerly, Rhode Island, Nancy and Curtis Carter, Waverly, Kathleen and Daniel Keene, Barton; a brother, Lewis Baldwin, Clearwater, Fla. He was affectionately known as “Poppy” by his 17 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. He was predeceased by his brothers, Hugh, Albert and Cliff; sisters, Amy Vargason and Mary Donaldson; and a granddaughter, Karen Baldwin.

Funeral services and a celebration of Aaron’s life will be held on Wednesday, December 27, 2000 at 11 a.m. from the Sutfin Funeral Chapel, 273 Main St., Nichols. Rev. Val M. Rommel and Pastor Curtis Carter, will officiate. Interment will be in the Nichols Cemetery. The family will receive their friends on Tuesday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. at the chapel.
