MURPHY, JOHN P.

Mass for Msgr. John P. Murphy, 76, a retired Navy chaplain who grew up in Chicago’s Rogers Park neighborhood, will be Thursday in Albuquerque, N.M. Msgr. Murphy died Saturday [December 5, 1981] in his Albuquerque home. He retired in 1965 from the Navy with the rank of captain after serving 26 years, including assignments with Marine paratrooper units. Msgr. Murphy was stationed on the cruiser USS Helena during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. He is survived by a sister, Catherine; and three brothers, Msgr. James, Rev. Thomas, and William.
