SCHOLFIELD, CHARLES S.

Charles Scholfield, 68, 807 Grant St., Wausau, died Friday, July 29, 1988, at 11.22 a.m. at the Wausau Hospital Center.

He was born June 26, 1920, in Wausau, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Mark Scholfield. He was married Nov. 23, 1945, to Helen Diamond in La Jolla, California.

Charles was a very proud veteran of World War II, serving in the Marine Corps as a Carlson’s Raider during the Pacific Theater. After the war he returned to Wausau, his family’s home, where he and his wife, Helen, have resided since. Charles’ more often quiet nature covered his passion for Wausau and the people he knew. But that passion was illustrated by the many contributions and constant efforts for Wausau, Marathon County and his friends. He served as president of Manson Insurance since 1959, but in 1985, after continued health problems, moved to chairman of the board. What seemed to preoccupy him more was his very active roles on the Wausau City Council and Marathon County Board from 1950-1963. Never a seeker of the limelight, his contributions can be seen everywhere from the buildings at the UWMC Campus to parks and recreation areas throughout Wausau and Marathon County. Charles’ involvement with projects and people continued full pace until Friday when a 14-year battle with heart problems came to a conclusion.

The family requests that any memorials or contributions be addressed to the Wausau and Marathon County Parks Foundation or the Wausau Public Library.

Survivors, besides his wife, include two sons, Charles Edwin Scholfield and William Bowie Scholfield; on daughter, Miss Constance Harger Scholfield; two brothers, David and John Scholfield; one sister, Mrs. Peter Guernsey and two grandchildren.

The family asks that no visitation take place at their home but their presence will be greatly appreciated at the Memorial Services at the First Universalist Church on Tuesday, August 2, at 1 p.m. Rev. Stanley Gregory will officiate.
