MILLER, CHARLES D.

Pfc. Charles D. “Sachy” Miller, U.S.M.C., son of Don Miller of Albany, was killed in action [November 22, 1943] on an undisclosed battle front, according to a message received from the Navy Department Friday.

The message from Lt. Gen. Holcomb said: “Deeply regret to inform you that your son, Pfc. Charles D. Miller, U.S.M.C.R., was killed in action in performance of his duty and in the service of his country. Please accept my heartfelt sympathy. Letter following.”

Pvt. Miller was 19 years old and a graduate of Albany High School with the class of 1942. He was a member of the Albany basketball team for three years and played shortstop on the Albany Doddlesockers baseball team.

Pvt. Miller enlisted in the Marines Oct. 13, 1942, and took his basic training at San Diego, Calif. He went overseas in March of 1943.

Besides the father, Pvt. Miller is survived by his mother, Mrs. Frank Wojack of New Castle, and a sister, Mrs. Charles Wilson of Knoxville, Tenn.

Word of Miller’s death came the day after the parents of Marine Sgt. James R. Haisley, also of Albany, were notified their son had been killed in action. Miller and Haisley were friends.
