LUKE, ALEXANDER J.

Nine men from Philadelphia and vicinity died in action against the enemy between Aug. 31 and Sept. 6.

The Navy’s official casualty list for that period, announced yesterday, also disclosed four missing from this area and five wounded.

Platoon Sergeant Alexander J. Luke, 26, killed [August 7, 1942], had been a Marine for eight years, receiving a medal for valor in 1937. He was recalled to service in 1940, and his mother, Mrs. Catherine Duke, of 7914 Suffolk Ave., last heard in a letter from him that he was “somewhere south of the Equator.”

Sergeant Luke attended Tilden Junior High School, and was a veteran of the China station. He is survived by his mother, a brother, Edward, 23, and a sister, Bertha.
