HOWE, ALDER B.

First Lieutenant Alder B. Howe, 24-year-old Marine machine gun officer and son of Mr. and Mrs. Denckla Howe, of 7921 Lincoln Drive, Chestnut Hill, has been killed in action in the Pacific.

Eighty-seven other casualties were announced by the Navy Department yesterday, including one Philadelphian missing. The national list contained eight dead, eight wounded and a total of 71 missing.

Lieutenant Howe, whose name was not included in the Navy’s latest casualty list, joined the Marine Corps as an officer candidate on Aug. 7, 1941, and was only recently promoted to a first lieutenancy. He was graduated from St. Paul’s Academy in 1936, and Harvard University in 1940. While at Harvard he was a member of Hasty Pudding Club and the A. D. Club.

In a letter received Jan. 7, he told his parents that he was feeling fine and that everything was going well. He was killed in the South Pacific on Jan. 2 [1943].

Howe, who is a broker, and Mrs. Howe have two other children, Mrs. Walter Lippincott, the former Miss Helen Howe, and Mrs. George Clark, the former Miss May Howe.
