ZWICK, FRED J.

New Hartford, Sept. 6—(Special)—The only time Marine Platoon Sergeant Fred J. Zwick of Pine Meadow got home for a visit after enlisting in 1939 was in February, 1942, when relatives took this photo. He won’t be home again, they learned recently, because he gave his life [July 1, 1943] in the Marine Raider march on Viru Harbor, one of the toughest battles of the Southwest Pacific. He was at Pearl Harbor, attached to a ship, when the Japs attacked there. Eight months later he transferred to a Raider battalion and rose to platoon sergeant. His mother has turned to war work, at Colt’s Patent Fire Arms Manufacturing Company in Hartford. During his school days here, he was a Courant carrier. Besides his mother, he leaves two sisters.
