MURREN, LELAND L.

SIOUX FALLS – Leland LeRoy “Junior” Murren, 78, of 4606 E. Adams St., died Sunday, March 11, 2001, at Sioux Valley Hospital & University of South Dakota Medical Center.

He was born Oct. 3, 1922, in Centerville. He moved with his family to Sioux Falls, where he grew up and attended school. He attended Washington High School, then began working at John Morrell & Co. He joined the Marine Corps in 1942, and served with the 4th Raider Battalion in the Pacific during World War II. He saw action at Guadalcanal and Guam.

He married Juliet K. Kringen on Nov. 5, 1943, in Garretson. The couple lived in California while he completed his military duty, then returned to Sioux Falls after his discharge in 1945. He continued to work at Morrell, and the couple moved to Brandon in 1976. He retired after 42 years in the lard refinery department in 1983.

He was a member of the Brandon Lutheran Church, U.S. Marine Raider Association, Marine Corps League, and Ducks Unlimited Splitrock Chapter. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 628 and a former member of the United Commercial Workers Union Local 304A.

Survivors include his wife, Juliet; a daughter, Julie Zwak of Sioux Falls; four sons, Loren of Hot Springs, Garry of Norfolk, Neb., Marc of Sioux Falls and John of Brandon; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Lowell of Sioux Falls; and four sisters: Louise Morris of Montpelier, Vt., Harriet Eisenberg of Sioux Falls, Doris Matthews of Burlington, Texas, and Roseanne Hathaway of Kansas City, Kan.

Services begin at 1 p.m. Thursday at Brandon Lutheran Church with burial in the Norway Lutheran Church in Garretson.

Visitation begins at 2 p.m. today at George Boom Funeral Home with the family present from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.
