THURMOND, KENNETH L.

Funeral services for Marine Sergeant Kenneth Laverne Thurmond of Hollandale, killed in action in World War II at Okinawa, will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 4 o’clock at the Hollandale Cemetery by the Rev. Hobert B. Hawkins of the Church of Christ of Greenville. Military rites will be conducted at the graveside by Robert Edwin Marx Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars of Hollandale. Stovall Funeral Home of Greenville is in charge.

The body of Sergeant Thurmond, accompanied by military escort, arrived in Greenville at 1:15 Friday afternoon.

Sergeant Thurmond died in a hospital June 14, 1945, four days after he had been wounded in the battle of Okinawa. He was 23 at the time of his death.

Sergeant Thurmond was twice wounded in action before he was fatally wounded at Okinawa.

His mother received the posthumously awarded Purple Heart with two Gold Stars. He also received a Presidential Citation and a bronze Asiatic-Pacific Medal.

He leaves his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Thurmond, Sr., of Hollandale; three brothers, Robert Thurmond of Greenville, Paul Thurmond, Jr., and Glen Thurmond, both of Hollandale, and a sister, Mrs. J. C. Davis of Pettit.
