GARNER, WILLIAM L., JR.

William L. Garner Jr., 43, 1823 27th St., died Monday afternoon [February 22, 1965] following an unexpected illness.

Garner was pronounced dead at St. Catherine’s Hospital where he was rushed by fire department rescue-ambulance. He had taken a taxi to his home, according to police. Garner collapsed and died as he stepped from the cab. An autopsy will be held.

Deputy Coroner Thomas Dorff indicated he had been told by relatives that Garner had recently suffered a recurrence of malaria, a disease he contracted during World War II.

Born in Kenosha on Aug. 23, 1921, the son of Mr. and Mrs. William L. Garner Sr., he spent his entire lifetime in Kenosha. He attended Kenosha’s schools, including Mary D. Bradford High School.

On Aug. 27, 1942, he entered the United States Marine Corps. He was a Marine Raider and was wounded in action in the Asiatic-Pacific area. In May 1944, he was awarded the Purple Heart. He received his honorable discharge on Nov. 29, 1945.

He was a structural ironworker and a member of the Iron and Steel Workers Union.

Survivors include one son, Gary W. Garner, Kenosha; one stepson, Thomas Johnson, Kenosha; one stepdaughter, Mrs. John (Hope) Beldhuizen, Calumet City, Ill.; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William L. Garner Sr., Kenosha; one sister, Mrs. Arlo (Dorothy) Johnson, Ida Grove, Iowa, and one grandchild. His wife, Bernice, preceded him in death on Mar. 20, 1955.
