MCFADDEN, JOSEPH T.

Joseph T. “Copper” McFadden, 72, of Silver Spring, Md., formerly of Allentown, died Monday [October 9, 1989] at home. He was the husband of the late Eva Marie (Allem) McFadden.

A lawyer, he worked for the welfare and retirement fund of the United Mine Workers (UMW) before retiring in 1975 as assistant general counsel of the fund.

McFadden was star quarterback and three-letter man at Allen High School. He played on the 1933-34 basketball team at Allen under the late coach J. Birney Crum, and was captain of the team that won Allen’s first state championship in 1934-35. That season, McFadden was high scorer of his team with 328 points in 29 games.

He was a member of the Lehigh Valley Basketball Hall of Fame and the Allen High School Hall of Fame.

A Marine Corps veteran of World War II, McFadden participated in Bougainville and Iwo Jima and received the Silver Star. He served in the Marine Corps Reserves until retiring as a lieutenant colonel in 1958.

He was a graduate of Georgetown University, where he was quarterback of the football team that lost the 1940 Orange Bowl game to the University of Tennessee after being undefeated in the regular season. McFadden also participated in baseball and basketball at the university.

After serving in the Marine Corps, he returned to Georgetown and received his law degree.

Born in Allentown, he was a son of the late Thomas McFadden.

He was a member of St. Bernadette’s Catholic Church, Silver Spring.

Survivors: Son, Thomas of Annandale, Va.; daughters, Mary Parker of Kuttawa, Ky., Anne Whealton of Chincoteague, Va., and Kathleen Dunn of Silver Spring, and six grandchildren.
