ROLETTE, ALLEN E.

Pfc. Byron Higgins, 26, for many years an employee in the Dixie Highway Market, 13124 S. Western Ave., before entering the Marines 33 months ago, has been killed in action, and Pfc. Allen Rolette, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Rolette, 2851 Burr Oak Ave., a Marine Raider, is missing in action [July 21, 1944], according to official Marine Corps telegrams received within the last 36 hours. They both were in action in the Pacific islands.

Both of the young men are graduates of Community High School and both were very active in sports. A more detailed story appears on the sports page of this edition.

Pfc. Higgins was graduated in the class of 1936 and Pfc. Rolette was graduated in the class of 1943 of Community High.

Allen was sworn into the Marine Corps at the age of 19, on Saturday, March 31, 1943, immediately after graduating from Community High School here. He reported for duty on April 5 and received his basic training at San Diego, Calif.

While in high school, he was sports editor of the Red and White, school publication, and starred on the football squad there during the 1941-42 season. During his editorship on the Red and White, Allen contributed weekly detailed stories of all high school sports activities to the Sun-Standard. His first by-line story appeared on this page on Oct. 1, 1942 and his final story on March 29 of 1943, two days [before] his induction into the service.

A Marine Raider, he was known to have seen considerable action in the Pacific Theater of operations.
