The tragedy of war has struck deeply in the family of a Markham resident, George Fischer, of 15839 St. Louis Ave.

His nephew, Donald Barnes, son of Mr. and Mrs. Percy Barnes of Cudahy, Wis., was reported killed [July 20, 1943] in the south Pacific the family learned this month. The 19-year-old lad was a member of a Marine Raider unit. Donald’s elder brother, Herbert, 22 years of age, was killed in the crash of a bomber near Houston, Tex., on May 20.

A third brother, Richard, was 18 on Aug. 11 and reported for induction.
