SMITH, SERAPHINE B.

Pvt. Seraphine Smith, 20, has been killed in action [September 8, 1942] while serving with the Marine Corps, officials have informed relatives of the family.

He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Fred Smith and had made his home with a brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Frank N. Smith of Snyder Rd., North Canton.

“Present situation necessitates interment in locality where death occurred and you will be notified accordingly,” the Marine Corps telegram read.

“To prevent possible aid to our enemies, please do not divulge the name of his ship or station.”

Pvt. Smith enlisted Jan. 7, 1942, and received his basic training at Quantico, Va. A former employee of the Diebold Safe & Lock Co., he attended McKinley High School here.

A native of Canton, he is survived by three brothers besides Frank. They are Paul W., Harry and William M.of Canton, and four sisters, Mrs. Ray Marks and Mrs. Robert Barress of Canton and Mrs. W. F. Jones and Mrs. George Hansen of Akron.
