WOJTOWICZ, HENRY J.

Henry J. Wojtowicz, 77, a retired diesel operator at Union Carbide Corp., died Sunday [July 3, 1994] in Mount St. Mary’s Hospital, Lewiston, following a brief illness.

A native of Niagara Falls, Wojtowicz was a well-known local baseball player in the 1930s and had played in the minor leagues as a shortstop for several years. He was recognized by the Niagara Falls Oldtimers and inducted into their Hall of Fame.

He served with the U.S. Marine Corps’ First Marine Raiders during World War II.

Wojtowicz was a diesel operator for 32 years with Union Carbide’s Linde Division. He retired in 1970.

An avid bowler, he had belonged to numerous bowling leagues in Niagara Falls. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Ransomville.

Survivors include his wife, Doris E.; two daughters, Gerrianne Mulhern of Camp Hill, Pa., and Cynthia Sue Strickland of Appleton; a son, Michael D. of North Tonawanda; a sister, Stella Oblanski of Niagara Falls; and four granddaughters.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Immaculate Conception Church, 4671 Townline Road, Ransomville. Prayers will be said at 9:45 in Rhoney Funeral Home, 5893 Hoover Road.

Burial will be in Mount View Cemetery, Town of Cambria.
